Encephalomyelitis is a severe inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that affects both the brain (encephalitis) and the spinal cord (myelitis) simultaneously.
In this disease, the immune system malfunctions and begins to attack the body's own nervous tissue. The inflammation damages the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers — the “protective insulation” through which signals from the brain travel to the muscles and organs. As a result, nerve impulses can no longer travel through the body, leading to partial or complete paralysis.
